Gently

In 2012, Shea Seger collaborated with Darren Moss together producing the single Shame for Embed alongside Yuval (Soul Coughing, Reprazent) on drums. Positive feedback inspired them to perform a powerful EMBED set at Corsica Studios that subsequently led to an iconic video to much acclaim. Consequently they followed up with a mellow departure from the high energy protest beats of EMBED with a melancholy downtempo song Gently. After that the excitement was palpable and a top production team was assembled to style and shoot the video. Ultimately when the final edit was graded and presented everyone loved it. However the result was such a departure from the electro breakbeat intensity of EMBED that it was like a different band. Therefore the decision was made that certainly proved to be the fork in the road and so in short a new project We Are SYD was born.

Concept

Featuring Shea’s powerful vocals, lyrics and melodies, Darren’s dark keyboard production and Yuvals epic break beats. The 10 track album We Are SYD was written and produced at their West London studio. Recorded as a trio live drums, keys and vocals mixing their eclectic styles from
Dub, breaks, Hip and Trip hop to jungle breaks with dark pulsing bass synth grooves and melancholic ambience wrapped around powerful passionate songs.

Journey

Meanwhile the word was spreading locally in West London and furthermore music industry labels and publishers were showing even more interest. Likewise a fanbase was growing and moreover
due to popular demand it was time to start rehearsing the album. So firstly the studio was moved to a larger studio space. Secondly a staging area was constructed and an old dub sound system PA installed. Studio 19 was rapidly designed and subsequently turned into a mini private club. AJ a resident HouseFM DJ took the reins and the We Are SYD party nights began, culminating in exclusive live rehearsal sets from We Are SYD. Consequently they performed at 7 legendary nights to an appreciative invite only home crowd over 4 months in 2016.
These events were filmed and the videos will be released after the album drops.

Final Curtain

In conclusion just when everything was looking like all the hard work was going to pay off, a series of heartbreaking life changing events occured. This totally derailed the We Are SYD project and sadly by the end of the year the dream was over, After that Shea moved back to the USA and Yuval returned to Israel. Therefore to sum up Darren kept the dream alive long enough to mix the album but the idea to tour the festival ready album was over for
We Are SYD and consequently the album was never released.

Good News

So to the good news, Darren teamed up with legendary acid house pioneer Baby Ford and together they produced 2 new remixes finally releasing Gently on vinyl, distributed through Juno Records.

Gently (Baby Ford & Dazmos Backroom Mix) - Review

Baby Ford and Dazmos took the limelight on this first release on Nice 1, now released digitally for the first time. We Are Syd’s original “Gently” is a mellow downtempo roller featuring choice vocals from Shea Seger, but it’s the remixes here that get pride of place. Ford and Dazmos lock into an understated drum machine funk draped in hazy pads on their Backroom Mix, while on their Frontroom mix they push the club elements to the forefront, riding the rhythm section with intent while still retaining the smoky spirit of the original to create with an impeccable club cut that should nestle comfortably into the bags of all deep digging house heads.
